『ケス』（1969）

私が12歳の時、母と一緒に『ケス』を観に行ったのをはっきり覚えている。映画を観るために、私たちが住む田舎町からエディンバラまで車で行くのは特別な楽しみだった。ロージアン通りにあるABCという劇場は、エディンバラ国際映画祭の本拠地であるフィルムハウスからほんの数ヤード。そして、この映画のリアリズムに私は度肝を抜かれる。登場人物はあまりに現実味があり、演技だなんて信じられなかった。当時の私はこの映画に出てくるような人々を実際に知っていたし、それまでに観た映画で最も真実を描いた物語だった。

I distinctly remember going to see "Kes" with my mother when I was 12 years old. It was a special treat to drive from our country town into the city of Edinburgh to see the film. It was the ABC on Lothian Road, just a few yards up from where Film House, the base of the Edinburgh Film Festival is now. I was knocked out by the realism of the film. I thought the people were so genuine that I couldn't believe they were acting. I actually knew people who were like the characters in the film and it was the truest story I'd ever seen on film.

『カンバセーション…盗聴…』（1973）

『カンバセーション…盗聴…』を観たのは、公開の1974年だったはず。当時、私はロンドンの学校で大学進学の勉強をしていた。実家はスコットランドで遠すぎるので週末も家に帰れなかった。そのため、週末はロンドンにある素晴らしいミニシアターで映画を観て過ごすことが多かった。劇場はたくさんあったが、主要な劇場が学校の近くに3、4館あった。私のお気に入りは、ポートベロー通りにあるエレクトリック・シネマ。そこで、『カンバセーション…盗聴…』を観たはずだ。友人のイアン・ノックスと一緒に行ったと思う。当時、彼はNational Film Schoolに通う若い監督だった。この映画は手に汗握る恐怖劇で、主演のジーン・ハックマンは目を見張るほど素晴らしく、若きハリソン・フォードも出演している。驚いたのは音響の手法だった。プロの盗聴屋が、人が賑わう公園で男女の会話を録音し復元しようとする。この映画にはたくさんの見事な仕掛けがあるが、最も驚いたのは、制作者は音響を駆使することで物語に歪みをもたらしている。力強い物語の運びは、終始見事。映画制作の複雑さに興味を持たせてくれた作品だ。

I must have seen "The Conversation" when it first came out in 1974. I was studying for my A levels at a school in London and, because my family home was in Scotland, I couldn't go home at weekends as it was such a long way. So I spent many of my weekends watching movies at London's excellent art house cinemas. There were lots and three or four key ones were near my school. My favourite was called the Electric, in Portobello Road, and I must have see The Conversation there. I think I went with my friend Ian Knox, a young director who was studying at the National Film School at the time. The film is a gripping thriller featuring an incredible Gene Hackman and featuring a very young Harrison Ford. It was the use of sound that amazed me. The film is about a surveillance expert who records a couple as they talk in a busy park, trying to decode what they're saying. There are so many incredible layers to the film but what struck me most was the way the film-maker manipulated the sound to bring about the twist in the story. Very powerful story telling - brilliant from start to finish. It made me interested in the complexities of film-making.

『イレイザーヘッド』（1976）

1978年夏、エディンバラ国際映画祭での私の初仕事だった。フェスティバル・ディレクターのリンダ・マイルズに3年間チームに加わりたいと頼み、ついに参加することができた。プログラム・エディターの手伝いと宣伝を担当し、一日の終わりには、自分たちで作った簡易的な映画館で、選考に送られてきた作品を鑑賞したものだった。カナダから、うす汚れたフィルム缶の山が届いたのだが、『イレイザーヘッド』というタイトルから非常に興味をそそられた。映画の冒頭から分かったのは、私たちは異常に奇妙で独創的なものを見つけたということ。これはデヴィッド・リンチの最初の映画で、彼が最初に作品を送った映画祭だった。本当に奇妙な映像に驚き、まったく理解できなかった。覚えているのは、上映時は妊婦の入場を止めるために、会場外に誰か配置した方が良いと思ったこと。だってあまりにも不安にさせてしまう！デヴィッド・リンチ映画において、彼の国以外での最初の上映に、私は居合わせたと思いたい。初めて、私も歴史の一部だと感じた。

"Eraserhead" by David Lynch.
It was my first summer working at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 1978. I had begged the festival director, Lynda Myles, to let me join the team for three years running and at last she'd let me in. I was working helping the programme editor and doing publicity. At the end of the working day we would all sit down in our makeshift cinema and watch films that had been sent in for selection. We received this scruffy looking pile of film cans from Canada but were really intrigued because of the title, "Eraserhead". From the start of the film I knew we'd discovered something extremely strange and very original. It was David Lynch's first film and ours was the first festival he sent it to. I was amazed by some of the really weird images and I wasn’t at all I understood it all. I remember thinking afterwards that we should have someone outside the cinema when we showed it preventing pregnant women from going in - it was that disturbing! I like to think I was present at the first screening of a David Lynch film outside of his home country. I felt I was part of history for the first time.
